Comet 153P/Ikeya-Zhang, 07-09 April 2002

Comet 153P/Ikeya-Zhang was easily visible in binoculars and sometimes to the naked eye during March and April 2002. I couldn't photograph it from home because of light pollution, so made several trips to locations with darker skies. Unfortunately, most of the images were not very good. I was frustrated by mist on several occasions: indeed, it can be surprisingly misty around Ipswich in the morning. On one occasion I could see the comet from home so drove out of town to photograph it only to encounter fog with a visibility of only 30 metres! Below are three of my best images of the comet.

Ikeya-Zhang 1, 07 Apr 2002 07 Apr 2002. Ten minute exposure.

Ikeya-Zhang 2, 07 Apr 2002 07 Apr 2002. Ten minute exposure.

Ikeya-Zhang, 09 Apr 2002 09 Apr 2002. Three minute exposure.
