Comet 46P/Wirtanen And Minor Planet Egeria, 06 February 2008
Comet 46P/Wirtanen is in Pisces about 6° below the galaxy M74 and slowly moving away from the Sun. It will pass a few degrees above the Pleiades in early March 2008 as it starts to fade. Currently the comet is 0.93AU from the Earth so it is the closest of the four comets which I imaged this week (the other three are 17P/Holmes, Schwassmann-Wachmann and Comet Chen-Gao).
My first image of the comet is below. Details are as follows: 06 February 2008, 19:08 - 19:28 UT; 32x30 second exposures; FOV 70x50 arcmin; North up; 16 cm F/2.5 Schmidt camera with MX916 CCD. The image also shows asteroid (13) Egeria which I did not at first identify! Its shorter trailed image shows that it is moving relative to the stars but much more slowly than the comet as it is about 2.7 AU from Earth.
